News have emerged revealing that a South African player who recently represented his side at the 2026 World Cup has died at 25.
South African football has been plunged into mourning following the sudden passing of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams. He was 25 years old.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by football officials and family representatives on Saturday, July 11, 2026, just weeks after Adams represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams played a key role in Hugo Broos’ historic World Cup squad, helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages for the first time in the nation’s history.
The talented midfielder featured in all three group-stage matches, starting against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in South Africa’s memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea, a result that secured qualification for the Round of 32.
South Africa’s campaign eventually ended with a defeat to co-hosts Canada on June 28.The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) paid tribute to the midfielder in an emotional statement, saying: “Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large. South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”
Adams’ mentor and family spokesperson, Brendine Johnson, also spoke of the devastating loss.
“This passing has ripped everybody apart, returning from the World Cup and then to get such news. I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive on returning back… He was prepared.” Johnson said.
A product of Stellenbosch FC’s youth system, Adams secured a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers, helping them win the CAF Champions League during the 2025/26 season.
On the international stage, he earned 13 caps for South Africa and was part of the squad that claimed the bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Adams family and Mamelodi Sundowns have appealed for privacy as they mourn the loss of the talented midfielder. No official cause of death has been disclosed.
