Patrick Stewart, the sophisticated actor who brought a Shakespearean touch to Star Trek and the X-Men while transforming from a British stage veteran to a sci-fi icon, died. He was 86.

Stewart died on Wednesday at home in Los Angeles, after “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia,” according to longtime spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak.

Bush Novak wrote, “He was held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all.” “We will always treasure the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his unrivaled grace.”

Stewart had decades of classical theater experience in England by the late 1980s, but he was unfamiliar with America when he was assigned command of the USS Enterprise.

The Next Generation producer Robert Justman attended a UCLA lecture featuring Stewart and saw him read from Shakespeare in his signature patrician style.

Justman invited the actor in for an audition against the wishes of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, who did not believe a bald British actor could be the face of the new series.

After a contentious casting process, Stewart won over the notoriously picky Roddenberry and signed a long-term contract to play Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, despite believing the show would not last more than one season.

“Every single person I spoke with, including agents, directors, screenwriters, and other actors, said, ‘Oh, don’t worry about six years. “You’ll be lucky to get through the first year,” Stewart said in 2010. “Everyone thought it was crazy to try to revive an iconic series like William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy’s Star Trek. So, based on that advice, I signed a six-year contract.

In announcing his casting, the Los Angeles Times called him an “unknown British Shakespearean actor.”

Brent Spiner, who played the android Data on the show, created a bright red sign to hang above Stewart’s dressing room that read, “WARNING: Unknown British Shakespearean Actor.”

Next Generation debuted in September 1987, two months after Stewart’s 47th birthday, and initially struggled to gain traction among Star Trek fans, many of whom saw the new cast as pretenders to the throne.

Despite its ups and downs, the series reached new heights in 1990 with the season-three finale, “Best of Both Worlds.”

The episode featured the first cliffhanger in Star Trek history, with Picard being abducted and assimilated by an alien race known as the Borg.

It was a truly shocking moment, pulled off decades before such plot twists became common on television.

Stewart also appeared in several episodes regarded as among the best in sci-fi television history, including 1990’s alternate timeline-focused “Yesterday’s Enterprise” and 1992’s “The Inner Light,” in which Picard lived an entire lifetime in the blink of an eye.

Stewart and his American cast became known as one of the closest on television, but in the beginning, the theater veteran struggled to accept the jokes that came with a typical 14-hour day on set.

“Those guys taught me that you can do good work while also having fun,” he said in 2013. “Before that, I had always assumed the two were completely unconnected.”

Next Generation ended in 1994 after seven seasons, earning an Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series and spawning four films: Star Trek: Generations (1994), co-starring Shatner; Star Trek: First Contact (1996); Star Trek: Insurrection (1998); and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), which pitted Stewart against a then-unknown Tom Hardy as Picard’s younger clone.

Stewart admitted that he had been typecast in Star Trek, so he was hesitant when offered the role of Prof. Charles Xavier in X-Men (2000) in the final years of Next Generation’s film run.

X-Men, an adaptation of the Marvel comic books, was a groundbreaking film that ushered in a new era of superhero cinema.

Stewart played Xavier in seven more films, including X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and Logan (2017), as well as cameos in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), and Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

For many years, he played Picard and Xavier, giving him the opportunity to explore layers upon layers with his characters, which few actors ever get.

Patrick Stewart Biography

Stewart was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, to Alfred and Gladys Stewart.

His father was a semi-skilled laborer and a World War II veteran, one of the last to be evacuated from Dunkirk.

Alfred, a heavy drinker, was physically abusive to his wife but not his three sons. Stewart discovered decades later that his father’s violent behavior was most likely the result of undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Stewart, the youngest member of the family, found himself terrified at home and was frequently tasked with getting between his father’s fists and his mother.

Growing up in those circumstances inspired him to later advocate for veterans and victims of domestic abuse.

At the age of 15, he began working for the local newspaper, The Dewsbury Reporter, where he was tasked with interviewing bereaved family members when someone died in town.

Journalism was not his passion, and he spent most of his free time with drama groups.

His editor eventually told him he had to choose between acting and journalism, and he resigned on the spot.

Stewart worked as a salesperson at a furniture store to supplement his income, but by the age of 18, he had won a scholarship to Bristol Old Vic Theater School.

At the age of 26, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and spent the majority of the 1960s with both the company and the National Theater.

After appearing in a number of British films and television shows, he made his American debut in John Boorman’s King Arthur film Excalibur (1981), followed by a role as the minstrel Gurney Halleck in David Lynch’s cult sci-fi classic Dune (1984).

Stewart was nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as Captain Ahab in the 1998 miniseries Moby Dick, as well as for his performance as King Henry II in the 2003 film The Lion in Winter.

A humorous guest appearance on the HBO comedy Extras, in which he played a lecherous version of himself obsessed with seeing women naked, earned him another Emmy nomination in 2006, and he was nominated again in 2010 for his role as King Claudius in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Hamlet.

In 2015-16, he starred as cantankerous British talk show host Walter Blunt on Starz’s Blunt Talk, earning him his third Golden Globe nomination.

He was also the voice of Avery Bullock on American Dad! for many years. He played Bosley in Elizabeth Banks’ reboot of Charlie’s Angels (2019) and provided a voice for The Sheep Detectives earlier this year.

In the 2001 New Year Honors list, Queen Elizabeth II named him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and she knighted him in 2010. “I never imagined anything like that could happen to me, and it remains a significant unreality for me,” he stated.

Stewart got married three times. He married theater choreographer Sheila Falconer in 1966, and they stayed together until 1990.

They had two children: Daniel, who appeared in Blunt Talk, and Sophia. He was married to Star Trek producer Wendy Neuss from 2000 to 2003 before marrying jazz musician Sunny Ozell in a 2013 ceremony officiated by McKellen.

“Like me, Jean-Luc has lived an unusual life that has taken him far beyond the bounds of normal human experience,” he wrote in Making It So, his memoir from 2023. “But he is also someone who has stayed true to his earthly roots, which are what gave him his identity. Finally, he feels the call of home, just as I do.”
