Valencia forward Sadiq Umar has expressed uncertainty regarding his international career after indicating that he is contemplating retirement from the Super Eagles.

In a discussion with Radio France International Hausa, the striker mentioned that no definitive decision has been reached, emphasizing that his future with the national team will be evaluated once the new season commences.

“I am contemplating retirement from the Nigerian national team, but I will finalize my decision when the new season starts,” he stated during the interview with Radio France International Hausa.

Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the World Cup has sparked discussions throughout the football community, and Umar did not hesitate to recognize the disappointment, although he refrained from assigning blame or identifying specific causes.

“I cannot specifically identify the reason for our failure, but that is now in the past. We must concentrate on the next World Cup, which is four years away,” he remarked.

Concerns were also raised regarding his extended absence from recent Super Eagles selections, to which Umar provided a candid and measured response, suggesting that the situation is more about competition than any controversy.

“I was not selected. Perhaps my profile does not align with their needs, and there are other players performing well in the team because, as you know, Nigeria is rich in talent,” he explained.

When further questioned about whether age or motivation could impact his potential retirement decision, Umar highlighted personal reflection and long-term aspirations as significant factors influencing his thought process.

“I still have time to reach a conclusive decision on that matter. This is why I mentioned that I will wait for the commencement of the new season before making my choice, allowing me to contemplate what will aid me in concentrating on my career and sustaining my presence in football, similar to Cristiano Ronaldo.”
