Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami has dismissed the chances of England, Germany and the Netherlands winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, backing France and Argentina as the strongest contenders for the title.

The Nigerian football legend shared his assessment in his Vanguard newspaper column as the group stage draws to a close across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Despite England, Germany and the Netherlands progressing to the Round of 32 with impressive group-stage campaigns, Odegbami believes each team has weaknesses that could prevent them from lifting the trophy on July 19.

Odegbami questions European heavyweights

England qualified after beating Croatia 4-2 before playing out a goalless draw against Ghana, while Germany topped Group E despite a surprise 2-1 defeat to Ecuador in their final match.

The Netherlands also finished first in Group F with seven points after recording victories over Sweden and Tunisia following an opening draw with Japan.

However, Odegbami said the three teams lack the qualities needed to go all the way.

“On the whole, as the last matches of the Group stage are to be concluded this weekend, a few teams have stood out, albeit it temporarily, to me – France, Argentina, Holland, Mexico.”

He was particularly critical of England, saying: “England don’t have enough great talent in their overrated team.”

On Germany, he added: “Germany are loaded with many young players and an aged goalkeeper. They can’t win big.”

The former Green Eagles captain also questioned the Netherlands’ ability to deliver under pressure.

“Holland are dangerous, look good during this championship but have no history and experience to cross the finish line unscathed.”

France emerge as favourites

Odegbami believes France have shown the strongest title credentials after winning all three Group I matches.

Didier Deschamps’ side defeated Senegal and Iraq before sealing top spot with a 4-1 victory over Norway, led by Ousmane Dembele’s first-half hat-trick.

The former Nigerian international said France’s attacking quality gives them an advantage over the rest of the field.

“Where would I wager my bet? The frontline of France appears to me to be a little bit sharper, faster and more inventive than all the others. With Mbape and Dembele, the French look unstoppable by most defenses.

“I can’t wait for the Group of 32 to start! Thats when the men will be separated from the boys.”
