San Francisco police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a Molotov cocktail attack at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and subsequent threats made outside the company’s headquarters. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, marks a significant escalation in the tensions surrounding the artificial intelligence industry.

According to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), an unknown male threw an incendiary device at a residence in the North Beach neighborhood at approximately 4:12 AM before fleeing on foot. The suspect was detained roughly an hour later after authorities received reports of a man threatening to burn down another building. Officers investigating the scene at Altman’s house found evidence linking the individual to the fire.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that no injuries occurred during the attack and expressed gratitude for the rapid response of local law enforcement. The company is currently assisting agencies with the ongoing investigation. While police have not yet commented on a specific motive, the incident follows a period of heightened public scrutiny for the AI startup.

OpenAI has recently faced significant backlash over its decision to partner with the U.S. government, allowing its technology to be used in classified military operations. This pivot toward defense contracting has become a flashpoint for critics, especially following a recent public dispute between rival firm Anthropic and Washington. Public sentiment regarding AI remains polarized, with recent polling suggesting the technology’s popularity has dipped significantly.

Sam Altman addressed the attack in a blog post published Friday afternoon. While acknowledging that much of the industry’s criticism stems from sincere concerns regarding the high stakes of AI development, he called for a shift in how these debates are conducted.

“While we have that debate, we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally,” Altman wrote.

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. Law enforcement officials have not yet released the individual’s identity or formal charges.
