The World Health Organization (WHO) has sharply reduced the number of suspected Ebola cases in Central Africa, lowering the figure from more than 900 to 116 after further testing ruled out many patients.

As of May 31, there were 330 confirmed cases, including 321 in the Democratic Republic of Congo and nine in Uganda. The outbreak has caused 49 confirmed deaths, while six patients have recovered.

WHO said many initially suspected cases were later found to be malaria, meningitis, typhoid, or other illnesses with symptoms similar to Ebola. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment.

Health officials stressed that suspected case numbers can fluctuate as investigations continue, while confirmed cases may rise as testing progresses. Preventive measures remain the primary tool for containing the outbreak.
