Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has revealed why he chooses to live in Nigeria rather than in the United States.
In his first-ever Twitch appearance with streamer PlaqueBoyMax, the Grammy-winning artist shared that, while America offers fame and comfort, he experiences true freedom only in his home country.
“The definition of freedom is in my country,” Burna Boy said. “I can never be fully free here. Guys end up in jail here in America.”
The singer noted that, despite Nigeria’s imperfections, it allows him to express himself openly and live without unnecessary restrictions.
His comments quickly went viral, sparking widespread online discussions about cultural identity, systemic inequality, and how African entertainers view life in the West.
Burna Boy made these remarks during PlaqueBoyMax’s late-night Twitch segment In The Booth, which marked his debut on the streaming platform. The show attracted thousands of viewers who tuned in for freestyle moments, candid conversations, and humor-filled exchanges.
During the live session, Burna Boy also spoke about his three upcoming projects and creative process, emphasizing his dedication to writing all his songs himself. He described originality as his strongest quality and the key reason fans connect deeply with his music.
Clips from the stream quickly spread across social media, with many fans applauding his honesty and pride in his roots.
A humorous highlight came when a viewer using the name “Davido” sent several Twitch subscriptions to Burna Boy and PlaqueBoyMax. The playful act drew laughter from both men, with Burna Boy joking about the friendly jab referencing his long-rumored rivalry with the real Davido.
Fans filled the chat with emojis and jokes, calling it one of the funniest online moments of the year.
By the end of the stream, Burna Boy’s statements had become a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter), earning both praise and mixed reactions from audiences across Africa and the U.S.
