Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has slammed Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, claiming the pair lack the leadership required to represent the club.

The comments follow Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton, a result that extended their poor run to five consecutive Premier League losses without scoring.

“We do not have leaders”

Speaking to ESPN FC, Leboeuf pointed to a lack of authority in key areas of the pitch, despite the club’s heavy investment in midfield.

“We have been players and we can see… we do not have leaders in that team,” he said. “We need a goalkeeper as a leader, we need a centre-half, we need a midfielder.”

The former France international suggested that Chelsea’s struggles are rooted in the absence of experienced figures capable of guiding the team through difficult moments.

Comparison with past Chelsea stars

Leboeuf compared the current squad with players from his era at Stamford Bridge, insisting standards have dropped significantly.

“Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are not leaders. I’m sorry, I’ve seen leaders,” he added. “I’ve played with Dennis Wise, Craig Burley, Roberto Di Matteo… Marcel Desailly, Steve Clarke… Vialli, Gullit, Zola. Those players were leaders.”

He went further in his assessment, stating: “Those players don’t deserve to play for Chelsea right now. They’re not good enough.”

Focus shifts to recruitment strategy

Leboeuf also questioned the club’s transfer approach, arguing that the emphasis on young talent has come at the expense of leadership and experience.

“What can be changed now I don’t know. But next year, please to the board buy leaders. Otherwise Chelsea will never be the Chelsea we have known,” he said.

Despite growing pressure on head coach Liam Rosenior, Leboeuf believes replacing the manager before the end of the season would have little impact.

“You have to wait for the end of the season… changing Rosenior for anyone else two months before the end of the season I don’t know if it will mean anything,” he concluded.
