Neymar Jr has admitted he broke down in tears for several hours after being included in Brazil’s World Cup squad, describing the call-up as the emotional climax of a long and difficult recovery journey.
Emotional release after injury setback
Neymar said the moment he learned of his inclusion triggered an intense emotional response, as he reflected on the physical and mental challenges of his rehabilitation.
In a video he posted on social media showing the moment he found out he was included, he is seen hugging his physiotherapist, Rafael Martini, and his fitness coach, Ricardo Rosa.
Both men had important roles in his recovery
“It’s difficult to explain with words the emotions I’ve felt,” Neymar said while addressing his Santos teammates and the club staff.
He credited the medical and performance staff who supported him throughout his recovery process, saying the call-up represented a collective achievement rather than an individual one.
“I want to thank everyone here. This call-up wasn’t just for me but for everyone involved in the process, everyone who was with me on the pitch, off the pitch, looking after our safety, our fitness and our meals.”
He added that the news made the sacrifices worthwhile after a prolonged spell away from international football.
Return to international duty confirmed
The 34-year-old, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, will now feature at his fourth World Cup after being selected by coach Carlo Ancelotti in the final squad.
His inclusion ends months of uncertainty over whether he would be fit enough to return to the highest level of international competition following his injury layoff.

Brazil will continue their build-up with warm-up matches against Panama and Egypt before travelling to the United States for the tournament.
They begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco, followed by group fixtures against Haiti and Scotland as they target a sixth world title.
