Nigerian media personality VeryDarkMan has reignited debate over music awards and artistic merit after questioning the value of Wizkid’s Grammy wins.
In a recent commentary, VDM argued that Wizkid’s accolades do not reflect the same level of musical artistry as those associated with the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He pointed out that Fela was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025 and is scheduled to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026, a recognition he described as far more significant.
VDM dismissed Wizkid’s Grammy for Best Music Video, insisting it does not qualify as a “real” Grammy in terms of musical depth. He questioned Wizkid’s artistic credentials, stating that the singer does not play musical instruments and does not measure up to the musical legacy of the Kuti family.
According to him, Wizkid’s Grammy recognition was more of a compensatory award linked to Blue Ivy’s win, rather than a true reflection of musical excellence. He added that Wizkid lacks a body of work strong enough to compete purely on artistic grounds.
VDM further praised other Nigerian artistes, citing Burna Boy’s Best Global Music Album Grammy and Tems’ Best African Music Performance award as examples of recognitions that better represent musical achievement.
His remarks have sparked intense reactions online, with social media users divided between those who agree with his stance and others who dismissed his comments as provocative and disrespectful.
