Political scientist Obafemi George has said Nigeria’s current security challenges are more complex than those faced by previous administrations, arguing that the threat landscape has expanded beyond domestic insurgency into a more coordinated regional and international network.

Political scientist Obafemi George has argued that President Tinubu’s administration has inherited and is grappling with a more complex security environment than any of its predecessors, while also recording notable progress in combating insecurity.

According to George, the nature of the threat has fundamentally shifted since 2022, evolving beyond the Boko Haram insurgency into a broader, internationally networked security challenge.

He pointed to the recent killing of a high-profile terrorist figure in Mali described as the second most wanted terrorist globally and among the most operationally active as an indication of the scale and sophistication of the threat now facing Nigerian and regional security forces.

Despite these heightened challenges, George maintained that the administration has recorded meaningful successes, citing the rescue of children and other vulnerable victims as evidence of continued progress by security forces.

He urged the public to appreciate the changing dynamics of the threat landscape when assessing the government’s performance on security matters.
