Here are the five sports related topics that dominated Nigeria’s Google search table in the first half of the year 2026 (January – July).

From thrilling football matches to historic global tournaments, the first half of 2026 was a massive period for sports fans across Nigeria. As millions tuned in to follow their favourite teams, athletes, and sporting events, search bars were lighting up nationwide with real-time queries.

Sports enthusiasm in Nigeria reached new heights in the first half of 2026. Whether tracking major international tournaments or keeping tabs on star athletes, Nigerians turned to Google in record numbers to stay informed.

Here is a look at the top five sports topics that captured the attention of Nigerians and dominated Google search trends during the first six months of the year.

According to official Google Trends data covering the first seven months of 2026, major sports events and storylines dominated search traffic in Nigeria:

  1. FIFA World Cup 2026: Generated search interest several times higher than any other major topic in Nigeria. Searches spiked around the Super Eagles, the opening ceremony (featuring Burna Boy and Shakira), the final (Spain vs. Argentina), and individual star players like Erling Haaland and France’s squad.
  2. Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON): Dominated searches heavily in January, particularly the Super Eagles’ semi-final against Morocco and the final won by Senegal.
  3. Winter Olympics (Milan-Cortina 2026): Emerged as a surprisingly high search trend in February despite Nigeria having no ice hockey team, reflecting a broader interest in global mega-events.
  4. European Club Football & Player Transfers: European leagues and transfer sagas one such players was the Nigerian teenager Zadok Yohanna’s €28M move to Brighton remained major sports search topic.
  5. Super Bowl LIX: Interest peaked in February surrounding Bad Bunny’s halftime performance.
