European countries are facing one of its biggest governance disputes in recent years, with UEFA member associations reportedly prepared to boycott future FIFA competitions which includes the FIFA World Cup.

Why did UEFA decide to boycott the World Cup?

The decision to boycott the World Cup by UEFA was over FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s controversial proposal to sell stakes in a new commercial entity managing the tournament.

UEFA convened an emergency meeting involving its 55 member associations to discuss a unified response after FIFA unveiled plans to create a commercial subsidiary, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, valued at around $20 billion. The proposal would allow private investors to acquire a minority stake in the company that would oversee commercial rights such as broadcasting, sponsorship, and ticketing.

The plan has been met with fierce opposition across European football, with UEFA accusing FIFA of failing to properly consult stakeholders before announcing the proposal. Several football associations believe the move prioritises commercial interests over the long-term governance and integrity of the game.

There are reports indicate that a boycott of future FIFA tournaments, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup, has become one of the options under serious consideration if FIFA proceeds with the project unchanged. Such a move would have enormous implications, potentially excluding football powerhouses such as England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and other UEFA nations from the world’s biggest football tournament.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has criticised FIFA’s lack of consultation, calling the process “totally unacceptable” and urging member associations not to rush into approving the proposal before further discussions take place.
FIFA, however, has defended the initiative, arguing that the commercial restructuring would generate significant new revenue for football development worldwide.

The governing body maintains that the proposal would strengthen investment in the global game while offering financial benefits to its member associations. With tensions continuing to rise between FIFA and several continental confederations, the coming weeks could prove decisive.

Any formal boycott by UEFA nations would represent one of the most significant challenges to FIFA’s authority in modern football history.
