UK hit with more than 100 flood alerts

The United Kingdom has been hit with more than 100 flood alerts as melting snow from Storm Goretti combines with fresh rainfall and strong winds, raising the risk of widespread flooding and continued travel disruption.

Storm Goretti, described as the “worst snowfall in a decade”, left parts of the country paralysed after heavy snow, 100mph coastal gales, power cuts and major travel shutdowns affected thousands. More than 64,000 homes were left without electricity at the height of the storm, airports suspended operations, and rail operators issued “do not travel” warnings.

With temperatures now rising and rain sweeping in over the weekend, the Environment Agency and other authorities have issued 106 flood alerts and 12 flood warnings across the UK. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) warned that thawing snow could lead to flooding of low-lying land, roads and homes.

Flooding has already been reported in parts of East Sussex, while yellow and amber Met Office weather warnings for snow, ice, wind and rain remain in force across large areas of the country.

The impact of Goretti has been felt nationwide. Roads in the Midlands, South West and Wales were buried under snow and fallen trees, while schools across Cornwall, Wales and Scotland were forced to close. Temperatures plunged to –13.3°C in Aberdeenshire overnight, and forecasters say further ice and wintry showers are expected.

Air travel suffered significant disruption, with East Midlands Airport and Birmingham Airport temporarily closing runways, and dozens of flights cancelled at Heathrow. Rail services across England, Scotland and Wales are operating reduced timetables amid blocked lines and safety concerns.

Motorists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, and National Highways warned drivers to expect delays and to check forecasts before setting out.

Political pressure has mounted on the government to convene a COBRA emergency meeting to coordinate the response, with concern that regions such as the South West have been particularly hard hit.

The Met Office said the storm constitutes a “multi-hazard event,” with snow, rain, wind and ice posing simultaneous risks. Further widespread rain is expected on Sunday, with more snow over higher ground in Wales, the Midlands and northern England. Forecasters warn ongoing disruption is likely into the start of next week as conditions remain unstable.
