A video showing Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike avoiding drinking tap water during a public commissioning ceremony in Abuja has got people talking on social media.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 22, 2026, during the official inauguration of the newly completed Karu Water Supply Network. Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the event as the Special Guest of Honour.
Following the ceremonial ribbon-cutting, organizers distributed glasses to the Vice President, Minister Wike, and other top dignitaries. The officials were expected to sample the water directly from the newly commissioned taps to demonstrate its safety. While Vice President Shettima and several officials fetched and drank the water, Wike filled his glass but declined to drink it.
The footage quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions from Nigerians online.
Some argue that the Minister’s refusal to drink signals a lack of confidence in the quality and safety of the public water supply being delivered to residents, while others suggested it was a personal health preference or a routine security precaution.
