Weekly Round-up: Nigerian Stars Shining Abroad In Europe’s Top Leagues

Victor Osimhen has spent more of September watching from the bench than playing on it. The Galatasaray striker pulled up with a groin strain during a 3-2 win over İstanbul Başakşehir earlier in the month, and he’s missed three matches since with Galatasaray not committing to a firm return date – just “a few more weeks,” which in football usually means longer. Losing a striker who’d been central to the side’s attack leaves a fairly obvious dent, and it shows up in how often his name gets mentioned in press conferences he isn’t even at.

Ademola Lookman, meanwhile, is well past the settling-in stage at Atlético Madrid. He joined on transfer deadline day back in February and scored on his debut, so by now he’s had the better part of a season to get comfortable.

Turkey’s Nigerian goal rush

Turkey’s Süper Lig continues to be the place where Nigerian strikers go to remind everyone they can still finish. Kelechi Iheanacho has barely had a quiet month at Bursaspor, adding to a tally that’s turned him from a fringe figure at Celtic into someone defences in Turkey now actually prepare for.

Paul Onuachu ended an eight-match run without a goal in some style, scoring twice as Trabzonspor put five past Gençlerbirliği, though things turned sour fast when he picked up a knock and had to be helped off. Wilfred Ndidi has kept his head down at Beşiktaş through a summer of transfer noise – Manchester United’s interest came and went without much fuss on his end – and he’s still first name on the team sheet in midfield.

Steadier weeks further west

Not every Nigerian abroad is making headlines, and that’s fine. A lot of a footballer’s month is just showing up and doing the unglamorous parts properly. Samuel Chukwueze has been getting regular Serie A minutes for AC Milan, doing more pressing and tracking-back than anything that ends up in a highlight reel. Alex Iwobi passed 100 Premier League appearances for Fulham earlier this month, a landmark he’s now reached with three different clubs, even though Fulham lost the match itself. Calvin Bassey has held his own alongside him in defence, and Ola Aina is still Forest’s first-choice right wing-back, for now, with the club reportedly keeping an eye on alternatives who might do the job with better numbers.

For anyone in South Africa following these players number by number – checking scorelines on a phone propped against the kettle, or half-watching a stream with one eye on a group chat – the form lines matter beyond bragging rights. A striker only just easing back from injury, a forward suddenly finding his shooting boots again after a lean run, a winger picking up a personal milestone along the way, and a full-back fighting to hold onto his own shirt: all of it feeds into how prices move from one round of fixtures to the next, and it’s exactly the sort of detail worth weighing up before placing sports betting on 10bet.co.za.

Following this many Nigerian players across five or six leagues does mean juggling kickoff times that never quite line up. Saturday lunchtime in England overlaps awkwardly with Turkish evening fixtures, and Eredivisie games have a habit of finishing just as the bigger leagues are only getting started.

Osimhen’s next expected return date, Onuachu’s next start, Ndidi’s next derby, and Lookman’s next appearance in a fixture that actually tests him will tell us more about where each of them stands than anything from the past few weeks.
