Nigerian singer and songwriter Omah Lay has spoken candidly about his smoking habit, revealing that he has tried several times to quit but has struggled to give it up.
The Afrobeats star explained that, despite making efforts to stop smoking, he eventually decided not to put himself under pressure over the habit.
According to Omah Lay, his decision is partly influenced by his belief that life is temporary and everyone will eventually die.
“I love smoking a lot. I tried to stop, I forced myself but I can’t. I’m not forcing it anymore because life is one, whether I smoke or not, I am going to d!e one day.”
The singer also reflected on the stigma surrounding smoking in Nigeria, particularly among young people. He noted that because smoking is restricted by law in certain circumstances, young smokers can sometimes feel as though they are being treated like criminals.
He said:
“The fact that it’s illegal in Nigeria, as young boy smoking in Nigeria, you feel like a crim!nal.”
