Former Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has reportedly been named the new captain of the Portugal national team following Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international football.
The experienced midfielder is set to take over the leadership responsibilities from Ronaldo, who served as Portugal’s captain for several years and became the country’s most iconic football figure. Silva’s appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Portuguese national team as they prepare to move forward without their legendary former captain.
Cristiano comfirmed his retirement from international football on his social media accounts on Thursday, October 5, 2026 as he looks to focus on club football and his quest to score 1000 goals for both club and country.
The Real Madrid midfielder brings considerable international experience to the role, having represented Portugal in several major competitions, including the European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. Bruno Fernandes, Rúben Dias and João Cancelo are also among the experienced players expected to play important leadership roles within the squad.
Portugal will now look to Bernardo Silva to provide leadership, consistency and guidance as the team prepares for its next international challenges.
