A mother of two from Karatina in Nyeri County in Kenya is fighting to recover in hospital after she was allegedly attacked by a woman found living in her husband’s home.
Miriam Wangare recounted the harrowing incident from her hospital bed, explaining that she had been staying at her mother’s house with her children for several weeks.
In the evening of the attack, at around 7 pm, she strapped her seven-month-old baby onto her back and walked to her husband’s residence, hoping to request money for food as the family had nothing to eat.
When she knocked, the door swung open to reveal not her husband, but an unfamiliar woman. Miriam said she had no idea another woman had moved in with him.
“I knocked, and the door was opened. I expected to see the father of my children but a woman opened the door. I did not know he was living with another woman and I had not been informed,” she said in an interview translated by Tuko.co.ke.
Miriam said she asked to speak with the father of her children and assured the woman she would leave once she had done so.
“She called one of the kids that were inside the house and ordered him to get a knife, and in my mind I thought she only wanted to scare me, but I was wrong; she st@bbed me and got back in the house and locked herself inside,” said Miriam.
Neighbours heard the commotion and rushed to her aid, transporting her to hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.
Her husband has reportedly said nothing about the incident since it occurred.
She is now calling on authorities to bring the alleged attacker to book and is simultaneously grappling with a mounting hospital bill, all while worrying about who is caring for her children.
“If the hospital can give me a waiver I will really appreciate or if there is any well-wisher who wants to assist, we ask for help,” she appealed.
