Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has provided an update on Emiliano Martínez after the Argentine goalkeeper was stretchered off the pitch during the Blues’ encounter against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Alonso confirmed that Martínez was conscious when he left the stadium but had been taken to the hospital for further medical examinations following the incident. The Chelsea boss admitted that he was still waiting for more information regarding the goalkeeper’s condition, with medical tests expected to provide a clearer picture of the severity of the injury.
“As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious. He’s in the hospital doing tests. This is what I know so far,” Alonso said.
The incident was a worrying moment for Chelsea, as Martínez’s injury became the major concern for the team despite an otherwise positive afternoon for the London club. The goalkeeper’s condition will be closely monitored as the club awaits further updates from the medical team.
Meanwhile, Chelsea had reasons to be encouraged by their performance against Everton, as Alonso’s side recorded their first clean sheet of the 2026/27 season. The defensive shutout was particularly significant, ending a run of 23 attempts without a clean sheet, with their previous shutout dating back to January 2026.
For Alonso, the result represents an important step towards improving Chelsea’s defensive organisation and consistency. Keeping Everton from scoring will provide a confidence boost for the team as they look to build momentum in the coming fixtures.
However, the positive result was overshadowed by the uncertainty surrounding Martínez’s fitness. Chelsea will hope the goalkeeper’s hospital examinations bring encouraging news and that the injury is not as serious as initially feared.
The focus for the Blues remains on Martínez’s recovery, with further updates expected once the results of his medical tests become available.
