A statement by Nigerian lawyer and political commentator Dele Farotimi has stirred widespread debate about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system as the 2027 general elections approach.

Speaking at a public discussion on April 13, 2026, Farotimi questioned the chances of a transparent voting process, stressing that long-standing systemic issues still weaken public confidence.

His remarks quickly gained attention online, attracting reactions from political observers, civil society groups, and many Nigerians concerned about the future of the country’s democracy.

The statement has sparked mixed opinions, with some viewing it as a strong call for urgent reforms, while others warned it could discourage people from participating in the electoral process.

“If you actually believe there will be a free and fair election in 2027, you are a fool,” Farotimi said, expressing frustration over what he described as ongoing flaws in the electoral system.

Reacting to the comment, a political analyst noted that such statements highlight the growing distrust among citizens, especially young voters, but cautioned that they could also deepen voter apathy if not backed by constructive action and reforms.

The development follows similar concerns raised after the 2023 general elections, where allegations of irregularities and logistical challenges dominated public discussions.

In January 2026, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also warned that delays in electoral reforms could affect the credibility of future elections, intensifying calls for transparency and accountability.
