Didier Deschamps has said that he will have discussions with Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé about the vacant France captaincy role.
Hugo Lloris’ (35) successor of Les Bleus has yet to be named. The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, and the most capped France player of all time, announced his international retirement in the wake of Les Bleus’ World Cup final defeat at the hands of Argentina in December.
Mbappé, as well as Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann; have been touted as the favourites to inherit the armband. Sources contacted by Get French Football News revealed back in early February that Mbappé was favourite to land the role.
Speaking to Téléfoot on Sunday, Lloris backed Mbappé to succeed him as France captain.
An announcement now seems close, but during yesterday’s press conference at Clairefontaine, Deschamps said that he will speak with the relevant players before making his decision. He did, however, go as far as to reveal that Mbappé is one of the players with whom he will speak.
“I will use these first few days to speak with the players concerned. Kylian will be a part of this discussion. You will know more the next time that I’ll see you (the media) on Thursday. Kylian is very skilled in his communication. I can’t tell you any more, I haven’t decided yet,” said Deschamps in a conference transcribed by RMC Sport.
Mbappé captained PSG against Rennes on Sunday, and he may get the chance to wear the armband for France against the Netherlands and Ireland later this month. We will know more in three days’ time.
