In a deft move to get the support of critical stakeholders, following the resignation of the National Chairman and Secretary, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), will today meet with members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF).
The meeting is coming barely after 48 hours Senator Abubakar Kyari took over as acting National Chairman and Barrister Festus Fuanter as acting Secretary of the party following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore.
The NWC at its Monday meeting resolved to reach out to critical stakeholders given the development in the party to seek their input in setting a new direction ahead of the postponed National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings of the party.
The new leadership of the committee is also pushing for a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was on an official trip to Kenya when the change of leadership was effected.
It was gathered that today’s meeting is tentatively billed for the NWC Hall of the Muhammadu Buhari House – the APC National headquarters in Abuja.
A member of the NWC who confirmed the meeting in confidence said,
“Today’s meeting with the governors is part of our plans to fully engage various segments and critical stakeholders of the party for their inputs in fashioning the way forward.
“I can tell you that the meeting is to hold later today (Wednesday). The decision to that was taken on Monday and the acting National Chairman is to drive the consultation with the leadership of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) for the meeting.”
When asked if the new leadership of the NWC has met with President Tinubu, the source simply said,
“I am not aware they have met with the President. I think it is still being worked out. Remember, the President returned from Kenya on Monday evening. I am sure the acting Chairman is on top of that and we are sure, he will inform the committee as soon as he meets with the President.”
A source in the party’s secretariat who has access to the workings of the NWC said that the outcome of today’s meeting with the governors elected on the platform of APC will be part of the issues the new leadership of the NWC will be taking to the President.
“With the postponement of the National Caucus and NEC meetings, NWC resolved to get the understanding of all stakeholders before the meetings are held. They are also striving to be on the same page with every organ of the party for a rancour-free NEC meeting where critical decisions on the future of the party are expected to be taken.
“It is after today’s meeting with the governors that the new leadership of NWC will be meeting with the President,” the source disclosed.
