It is looking likely that Africa could have a 10th representative at the 2026 World Cup.

The continent was originally allocated nine slots for the expanded version of the tournament.

Those places have already been filled by Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Ivory Coast and South Africa.

However, Africa could yet get an additional spot via the intercontinental playoffs.

On Sunday, the Democratic Republic of Congo beat Nigeria 4-3 on penalties, to qualify for the one-off game in March.

The Leopards are now one game away from play at next year’s World Cup.

They will face a team from Concacaf, CONMEBOL, Oceania and Asia, to earn a spot for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada in 2026.
