Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has suggested that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s Peter Obi may return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 26, Moro confirmed that discussions were ongoing with both men as part of the party’s strategy to reclaim power.

“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate’,” Moro said.

When pressed on the possibility of Jonathan returning to the PDP, Moro replied, “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”

Jonathan, who served as president from 2011 to 2015 after the death of Musa Yar’Adua, lost his re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, becoming the first incumbent leader in Nigeria’s history to be defeated at the polls. Since leaving office, he has maintained a low political profile and has not played an active role in PDP affairs, though loyalists have consistently called for his comeback.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before defecting to the Labour Party in the build-up to the 2023 election. His candidacy, which galvanized Nigeria’s youthful demographic, saw him finish third behind President Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

With less than two years until the 2027 elections, Obi has aligned with key opposition figures in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition while expressing interest in another presidential bid. However, it remains unclear under which party platform he intends to contest.

The PDP recently zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, a move expected to shape negotiations and alliances as the opposition prepares for what is anticipated to be a fiercely contested race.
