A 68-year-old man, Ahmed Olaniyan, fell into a well while attempting to recover his mobile phone in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident occurred at Mobolorunduro Mosque in the Molefalafia area of Oke-Ado, Ibadan.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, June 8, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Services Agency Reform and Chairman, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, explained that it happened when the man tried to retrieve his phone from the well without adequate knowledge of the risks.

In a statement, Akinwande said, “The distress call was reported at exactly 06:10hrs this morning, Sunday, June 8, 2025, through a telephone call by Mr Samuel that someone fell into a well at Mobolorunduro Mosque, No. 30 Ajeigbe Street, Molefalafia, Oke-Ado, Ibadan.

“The fire personnel, led by ACFS Adedeji (Mrs), promptly deployed to the scene of the incident. On getting there, it was discovered that a man, about 68 years of age, was trapped inside a deep well at Mobolorunduro Mosque while he was trying to recover his lost phone.

“The firemen swiftly swung into action by tying all necessary knots and observing precautionary measures.

The man was rescued alive and handed over to his family for proper care.

“The cause of the incident was ignorance, not knowing the danger associated with entering a well without proper training.”
