Former referee Pierluigi Collina has slammed Premier League referee Andy Madley, accusing him of taking pity on Manchester United during the Red Devils historic 7-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side scored goals in the second half during the thrashing of Erik ten Hag’s side with Mohamed Salah leading the line.

Referee Madley only added on an additional three minutes of injury-time, much to Collina’s surprise.

“Last weekend, ten matches were played in the Premier League and four matches exceeded 100 minutes [in total],” the FIFA referees’ chief told The Times.

“Two of them should have been higher than this only because they were 7-0 and 4-0 [Brighton v West Ham United] and the referee probably decided not to consider the additional time to be given accurately.

“Six goals were scored in the second half [at Anfield]. I can understand that giving quite a relevant amount of additional time when it is 7-0 is difficult to understand in this specific match.”

Apart from Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez scored a brace each while Roberto Firmino completed walloping Ten Hag’s men who were in splendid form before the game.

It was Manchester United’s heaviest defeat in 92 years and almost all Red Devils stars were blamed for putting up disappointing performance.

The Red Devils have, however, bounced back from the embarrassing defeat with a resounding victory over Real Betis in the Europa League Round of sixteen on Thursday night.
