Bauchi State House of Assembly has directed the State Shari’ah Commission to hasten its investigation into reports of alleged gathering of LGBTQ members in the state.
The directive follows claims made by a Kano Islamic Scholar, Dr Abdallah Usman Gadon-Kaya, in a viral video.
In the video, the scholar claimed that gays and lesbians from across Northern States had converged in Bauchi State to promote their activities which he said is contrary to the teaching of both Islam and Christianity.
The House made the resolution when a member representing the Chinade/Madara constituency, Dr. Nasiru Ahmed Ala, moved a motion under matters of urgent public importance during plenary on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
According to him, there is the need for the state Shari’a Commission to invite the Islamic scholar, Dr. Abdallah Gadon Kaya to provide evidence of the claim to ensure that Shari’a laws are applied against those involved in the act.
In his ruling, the speaker of the assembly Abubakar Sulaiman said the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended has given the house the power to direct and invite any person to appear before it for investigation and explanations on any issue of national interest or claim.
The state Shari’ah Commission had sent an invitation to Dr Abdallah Gadon-Kaya to come and clarify his claims about the suspected gay and lesbian meeting in Bauchi, but since then, nothing has been heard from the commission.
