New Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney firmly told U.S. President Donald Trump that Canada is “not for sale” during a tense meeting at the White House on Tuesday, May 6.

Despite clear differences, the meeting maintained a cordial tone, even as Trump continued to push the idea of making Canada the 51st state of the United States, a proposal he has floated multiple times.

Trump reiterated his stance, saying, “It takes two to tango, right? We’re not going to be discussing that unless somebody wants to discuss it.”

Describing such a union as a “wonderful marriage,” Trump left the door open for future talks. But Carney quickly shut down the notion, responding, “There are some places that are never for sale,” referencing iconic institutions like the White House and Buckingham Palace.

While Trump acknowledged Canada’s increased military contributions as a positive step, he refused to completely abandon his controversial proposal, concluding, “I say, never say never.”
