The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 23 suspected teenage miscreants in connection with recent incidents of assault, harassment, and theft in the Mushin area.

The suspects, aged between 14 and 16, were apprehended on Monday during coordinated police operations in Ishaga, Awolowo, and Ojuwoye areas of Mushin.

This was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the arrests were made following public outcry over a wave of street-level crimes committed in broad daylight.

“The command appreciates the feedback and concerns raised by members of the community regarding the recent incidents of daylight assaults, harassment and stealing from shops and from innocent members of the public on the streets by the suspects.

“These reports have informed a thorough review of our operational tactics and strategies,” Hundeyin said.

“In response, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, has promptly deployed more police tactical squads, Police Mobile Force, PMF, personnel and other Conventional Police Teams specifically to Mushin and the adjoining areas to bring them to justice,” he further stated.

He also confirmed that normality has been restored in Mushin and neighbouring communities, assuring residents of their safety.

“Lagos residents are encouraged to go about their lawful businesses and other activities without fear or apprehension,” he added.

According to him, the area commander overseeing Mushin has been directed to collaborate with the chairmen of the two local governments covering the affected areas. They have developed a strategic plan to reinforce security and protect residents and traders.

The police spokesperson affirmed that the command will continue its targeted raids on identified black spots, slums, and hideouts where criminal gangs are believed to operate. He emphasised that the crackdown will persist until all miscreants are removed from the area.

The arrested suspects, he disclosed, will be charged in court upon conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
