Nico Williams tipped to complete shock transfer amid rumours Barcelona deal will be ‘blocked’

In what could be one of the most surprising transfer twists of the summer, Spanish winger Nico Williams is now being tipped to join a club other than long-time admirers FC Barcelona. The 22-year-old Athletic Bilbao star, fresh from a dazzling Euro 2024 triumph with Spain, has suddenly seen his future veer away from Camp Nou, despite strong interest from the Catalan giants.

Williams, widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in European football, recorded 10 goals across all competitions last season. His electric pace, creativity, and increasing end product have made him a top target for several elite clubs, and Barcelona were believed to be leading the race for his signature.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta, despite the club’s ongoing financial limitations, reportedly has a keen interest in triggering Williams’ £49 million release clause. Given Barcelona’s historical ties to Spain’s national team stars and their need to rejuvenate their flanks with young blood, the move seemed like a perfect match.

However, according to reports from Spanish outlet SPORT, Athletic Bilbao may be preparing to block the transfer using a seldom-invoked regulation within La Liga financial laws. The rule in question is the so-called ‘1:1’ regulation, which restricts clubs from spending more on transfers than they bring in through player sales.

Bilbao’s interpretation of the rule suggests that Barcelona may not currently have the financial leeway to spend £49 million on a single player without offloading others to generate equivalent income. Should La Liga agree with Bilbao’s stance, the deal could face a major roadblock, potentially ending the Catalan club’s hopes of adding Williams to their ranks this summer.

This sudden twist has left Williams’ future hanging in the balance. Though Barcelona remain publicly confident, they now face competition from other European heavyweights, including Arsenal and Manchester United. Both English clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation closely and could step in with offers of their own if Barcelona falter.

The biggest shock, however, came when former Real Madrid icon Luis Figo gave his take on the saga. Speaking to Spanish publication AS, the Portuguese legend, who famously made a controversial switch from Barcelona to Madrid in 2000, suggested that Williams would be an ideal signing for Los Blancos.

“I’d definitely sign Nico Williams,” Figo said. “Considering the market today, I think his price is quite reasonable. He’s young, explosive, and incredibly talented. For Real Madrid, this would be a smart move.”

Figo’s comments carry extra weight not just because of his legendary status, but also because he knows firsthand the cultural and political storm that a high-profile transfer between Barcelona and Madrid can trigger. His own transfer two decades ago sparked such outrage that a pig’s head was famously thrown at him at Camp Nou.

Figo acknowledged the differences in playing style between himself and Williams but insisted the Spaniard’s profile made him an exciting prospect. “I wasn’t as fast as he is—he has something special. From a market perspective, he’s a bargain,” he added.

With Real Madrid still looking to bolster their attacking depth behind stars like Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo, Williams could be a natural fit. His versatility across the front line and relentless energy could offer Carlo Ancelotti another weapon in their already lethal arsenal.

Meanwhile, Barcelona fans are growing increasingly anxious. The possibility of losing out on Williams to either Madrid or the Premier League would be a bitter blow, particularly after the club had laid much groundwork to lure the youngster to Catalonia.

From Bilbao’s side, the motivation to block the transfer may not be purely financial. The Basque club have long prided themselves on their regional identity and the development of local talent. Losing Williams, one of their prized assets and a symbol of that philosophy, would be a significant blow—even if it nets them £49 million.

The situation is further complicated by Barcelona’s ongoing salary cap restrictions and debt recovery plans. While they continue to look for creative financial solutions, including player swaps and deferred payments, La Liga authorities have taken a stricter approach this season, leaving little room for maneuver.

As it stands, the transfer is far from a done deal. Nico Williams has yet to publicly commit his future, and the influence of interested clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, and now potentially Real Madrid means the saga could take multiple twists in the coming weeks.

For now, the football world watches with bated breath. Will Barcelona find a way to finance the move and fulfill Laporta’s vision? Or will history repeat itself with another dramatic transfer snatched away by their eternal rivals?

What is clear is that Nico Williams is no longer just a target for Barcelona—he’s become one of the hottest names on the market, with a transfer battle that could reshape the landscape of European football this summer.

And if Figo’s predictions come true, we may be set for another transfer bombshell that will reignite the Clasico rivalry both on and off the pitch.
