The city of Ibadan stood still on Friday, August 8, as the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, was finally laid to rest.

It was an emotional day at the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Aremo, where dignitaries, traditional leaders, and hundreds of Ibadan residents gathered to pay their last respects to the revered monarch.

According to Vanguard, the funeral service was filled with heartfelt tributes and deep reflections on a life that left a lasting impact on the ancient city and beyond.

Preaching at the service, the Archbishop of the Ibadan Province (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, described Oba Olakulehin as more than just a king. According to him, the late monarch was “a father, a guide, and a beacon of hope” whose reign was marked by peace, unity, and selfless service to his people.

“His dedication to justice and the welfare of the people will forever be remembered,” the Bishop said.

He praised Oba Olakulehin for his role in promoting peace and dialogue among different groups within Ibadan, stressing that the late monarch’s wisdom and compassion helped shape a more united city during challenging times.

“His reign was a testament to the power of love and unity,” Bishop Aladekugbe added, urging all who were present to honour the Olubadan’s memory by embracing the values he stood for.

The late Oba Olakulehin’s burial marks the end of an era, but his legacy of inclusive leadership, deep cultural respect, and genuine care for his people continues to echo through Ibadanland.
