Mohammed Sani Sami, the Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, has died at the age of 81.

The emir passed away on Saturday, August 16, in a hospital in London after a brief illness, according to a statement issued on Sunday by Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Government.

The statement, quoting Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, said details of the burial arrangements would be communicated in due course.

“The Kebbi Government is using this medium to extend its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family members, Zuru Emirate Council, Zuru people and the entire people of Kebbi,” the statement read, adding prayers for forgiveness of the late monarch’s shortcomings and the granting of Jannatul Firdaus.

Born in 1943, Mohammed Sani Sami had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, which he joined on December 10, 1962, before being commissioned as an officer on July 25, 1963. He later served as the military governor of Bauchi State between January 1984 and August 1985 under the regime of the late Muhammadu Buhari.

He ascended the throne as Emir of Zuru in 1995, a position he held until his death.
