A 50-year-old man from Zimbabwe’s Mberengwa district has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following his conviction for r@ping a 90-year-old woman, a case that has drawn widespread public approval and is being hailed as an example of justice for heinous crimes.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the attack occurred on the evening of June 11, 2025. The man approached the victim’s home and falsely identified himself as her grandson in an attempt to gain entry. The elderly woman, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, recognised that the voice was not that of a family member and refused to open the door.
Undeterred, the perpetrator forcibly broke into her bedroom, overpowered the nonagenarian, and s3xually assaulted her. Despite her brave efforts and cries for help, no one was nearby to intervene during the traumatic incident.
The following morning, the survivor alerted a neighbour, who immediately assisted her in contacting local authorities and filing an official police report. Investigations were promptly launched, leading to the arrest and subsequent prosecution of the offender.
The court’s ruling, which delivered a 20-year prison sentence, has been praised by Zimbabweans nationwide. Legal analysts say the case underscores the severity with which the justice system treats s3xual offenses against vulnerable populations, and it is being cited as a precedent to deter similar crimes in the future.
The NPAZ emphasised the importance of vigilance and community support in safeguarding the elderly and other at-risk individuals, urging citizens to promptly report any suspicious activity to authorities.
