A Nigerian Igbo lady has sparked reactions online after passionately insisting that traditional Igbo dishes should not be given English names.

In the viral video, the lady emphasized that many Igbo people have become too comfortable translating their native meals into English, a habit she believes weakens the cultural value of the language.

She said:

“This video is a reminder that Igbo food does not have English names. Ofokoro is Ofokoro. Ofe oha is Ofe oha. Ofe onugbu is Ofe onugbu. Abacha is Abacha. Ofe Nsala is Ofe Nsala. They don’t have English names.”

She questioned why Igbo people often try to “anglicize” their meals when other tribes proudly call theirs by their native names.

“Do you call Afang soup English name? No. Do you call Tuwo Shinkafa English name? No. Do you call Amala English name? No. So why must it be Igbo food that has to be renamed in English?” she asked.

According to her, foods like Apu should never be called “fufu,” insisting that doing so is an erasure of identity.

“Apu is Apu. There’s nothing like fufu — it is called Apu. Stop giving Igbo food English names. It matters because our language will not go into extinction. It won’t.”
