Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen showed remarkable resilience on Thursday as the Super Eagles secured a 4-1 victory over Gabon after extra time, booking a place in Sunday’s playoff final against DR Congo.
The match, played with high intensity, saw Nigeria dominate for long spells. However, the game took a dramatic turn late in normal time when Osimhen missed a clear chance that could have ended the contest without the need for extra time.
Osimhen reflects on missed chance
Despite the missed opportunity, the Galatasaray striker kept his composure and continued to push for a breakthrough.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Osimhen admitted that the moment was difficult but not unfamiliar.
“I am a striker, sometimes I score the goal no one believes, and sometimes I lose the ones people think I am going to score.”
He explained that his mindset helped him stay focused despite the setback.

Osimhen also revealed that he apologised to his teammates and promised to make amends in extra time.
“Just like I told my teammates, I told them I am sorry and I told them I am going to correct it in the extra time and I am happy I did it,” he added.

True to his promise, Osimhen delivered with two decisive goals in extra time, restoring confidence and sealing Nigeria’s commanding win.
Sevilla duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke also found the net, rounding off a strong performance from the Super Eagles.
