The Libyan Football Federation took to X on Monday to congratulate DR Congo following their dramatic penalty shootout victory over Nigeria in the CAF World Cup playoff final at Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium.
The Leopards, who have not reached the World Cup since 1972, now advance to the intercontinental playoffs for a chance at the 2026 edition.
Gesture laced with subtle dig?
While the message appears celebratory, there could be an undercurrent of grievance. Recall Nigeria and Libya were drawn in the same group for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but only one of their two scheduled fixtures was played.
The second game in Libya was abandoned after the Super Eagles’ delegation was reportedly held at an empty airport for almost a day without assistance, forcing Nigeria to leave.
CAF later ruled the match a forfeit, deducting points and goals from Libya, which contributed to their failure to qualify for AFCON 2025.
Given this history, Libya’s congratulatory post might carry more than just goodwill, serving as a taunt to Nigeria.
It remains to be seen whether they will extend similar support to DR Congo as the team enters the intercontinental playoffs.
