Taiwo Awoniyi could be set for a return to Mainz with the Bundesliga club targeting a January swoop, according to Kicker.

Mainz currently occupy bottom spot on the Bundesliga table, and are in need of more firepower upfront.

Awoniyi played for Urs Fischer’s side during the 2019/20 season, on loan from Liverpool..

The Nigeria international scored once in 12 league appearances.

A move to Mainz will see him reunite with Fischer, the man who facilitated his permanent transfer to Union Berlin from Liverpool in 2021.

Awoniyi is behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the pecking order at Forest.

The 28-year-old has made just five league appearances for the Tricky Trees this season.
