Here is why Naomi Osaka, who stole the spotlight with her stunning fashion at the 2026 Australian Open, has withdrawn from the tournament.

Naomi Osaka’s 2026 Australian Open campaign came to a heartbreaking end after the four-time Grand Slam champion was forced to withdraw due to an abdominal injury, just hours before her scheduled third-round match.

Osaka, a two-time Australian Open winner, was set to face Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night.

The former world No. 1 later confirmed the decision in an emotional statement shared on Instagram, explaining that continuing to play risked causing further damage.

“I’ve had to make the difficult decision to withdraw to address something my body needs attention for after my last match,” Osaka wrote. “I was so excited to keep going and this run meant the most to me, so having to stop here breaks my heart, but I can’t risk doing any further damage so I can get back on the court.”

The injury was identified as an abdominal issue, which had worsened during her early matches in Melbourne. Osaka had already pushed her body through two demanding three-set victories, battling past Antonia Ruzic in the opening round before defeating Sorana Cirstea in round two.

Despite the physical toll, Osaka said the decision to step away was made with her long-term health in mind.

“Thanks for all the love and support… I’m so grateful everyone embraced me so much,” she added. “And thank you to my whole team for always having my back and the tournament organisers for being so kind.”

Osaka’s withdrawal ends what had been an emotionally significant run for the Japanese star, who has spoken openly about the challenges of returning to top-level tennis. Her time at Melbourne Park also drew attention off the court, including a bold jellyfish-inspired outfit she wore for her opening match.

While her exit was premature, Osaka made it clear that protecting her body now is essential to ensuring she can return to competition healthy, even if it meant walking away from a tournament she holds close to her heart.
