Chelsea fans can now heave a sigh of relief as the latest reports indicate that the Blues can now qualify for the Champions League next season.

The landscape of the Premier League’s European race shifted dramatically Tuesday night. Following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon, it is now mathematically confirmed: fifth place in the Premier League will qualify for the Champions League next season.

This “European Performance Spot” (EPS) is a direct result of England’s dominance in the UEFA coefficient rankings. With the Premier League and La Liga securing the top two spots for the 2025/26 season, the traditional “Top Four” has officially expanded to a “Top Five.”

For Chelsea, currently sitting in 6th place, this news is a massive lifeline in what has been a rollercoaster campaign, as it signifies that the Blues can qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Current Premier League Table Standings (as of April 8, 2026)

With seven games remaining for most clubs, the battle for the final European spots is razor-thin:

Pos Team Played GD Points
4 Aston Villa 31 +5 54
5 Liverpool 31 +8 49
6 Chelsea 31 +15 48
7 Brentford 31 +4 46

Chelsea’s final fixtures in the Premier League

  • April 12: Chelsea v Manchester City
  • April 18: Chelsea v Manchester United
  • April 21: Brighton v Chelsea (Rescheduled)
  • May 4: Chelsea v Nottingham Forest
  • May 9: Liverpool v Chelsea
  • May 17: Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur
  • May 24: Sunderland v Chelsea

How Chelsea Can Qualify for the Champions League next season

The path for the Blues is much clearer now that the 5th-place safety net is secured. Here is how they can return to Europe’s elite competition:

1. Overtaking Liverpool for 5th Place

Chelsea’s most direct route is to leapfrog Liverpool. Only one point separates the two giants. While Chelsea has struggled for consistency, their superior goal difference (+15 to Liverpool’s +8) could act as an extra point if they finish level.

2. The “Sixth-Place” Scenario

There is a distinct possibility that even 6th place could result in Champions League football. If a Premier League team wins a European trophy (such as the Champions League or Europa League) and finishes in the top five, the extra qualification spot could potentially drop down to 6th. With Liverpool still in the Champions League quarter-finals and Aston Villa competing in the Europa League, Chelsea fans will be watching the continental results closely.

3. Chasing Down the Top Four

While a six-point gap to 4th-placed Aston Villa looks daunting, it is not impossible. Villa face a gruelling schedule with their Europa League commitments, and Chelsea’s lack of European football this spring allows them to focus entirely on the domestic sprint.

Why This Matters

For a club of Chelsea’s stature, returning to the Champions League carries enormous financial and sporting significance. UEFA’s new format brings increased prize money and more group-stage matches, with a projected additional £60 million-plus for qualifying clubs.

With the 5th-place spot now guaranteed for England, the margin for error has widened, but the pressure has only intensified. The Blues have seven “finals” left to ensure they aren’t the ones left out when the music starts next season.
