The American Airlines flight, operated as Envoy Air flight 3599, departed Miami at 10:26 am and landed less than three hours later, carrying senior Washington officials alongside civilian passengers.
The resumption of direct travel follows the dramatic removal of former leader Nicolas Maduro in January 2026 and the subsequent rise of Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who has largely cooperated with the United States.
In response to this shift in leadership, the Trump administration has begun easing sanctions and resuming formal diplomatic relations, leading to the reopening of airspace that had been closed since 2019.
Passengers on the inaugural flight, who previously faced eight-hour journeys through third-party hubs like Bogota or Curacao, celebrated the return of the three-hour route.
While initial tickets cost approximately $3,000, prices are expected to decrease as American Airlines prepares to launch a second daily round-trip flight on May 21. To mark the occasion, the airline featured a traditional Venezuelan menu including cachapas and Venezuelan-style chicken salad.
The warming of relations is expected to bolster the presence of U.S. businesses in Venezuela, a country holding the world’s largest proven oil reserves. This economic pivot comes as Venezuela opens its oil and mining sectors to private investment.
However, the diplomatic progress remains nuanced; while sanctions are being lifted, the Trump administration has simultaneously moved to terminate programs shielding Venezuelan migrants from deportation and the State Department still maintains warnings regarding crime levels in the country.
