Afrobeats singer Spyro has stirred conversations online after claiming that some religious leaders benefit from Nigeria’s economic challenges and growing insecurity.
Speaking during an interview on Wazobia FM Lagos, the “Who’s Your Guy” crooner expressed concern over what he described as the silence of many influential clerics regarding issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
According to Spyro, religious leaders have a responsibility not only to provide spiritual guidance but also to advocate for the welfare and safety of their congregants. He argued that many of them are not doing enough to address pressing national concerns.
The singer further stated that churches and other faith-based organizations possess enormous influence and should be actively educating their members on civic responsibilities, elections, and personal security.
Spyro suggested that some religious leaders may be reluctant to challenge the country’s problems because they benefit from the current situation.

“Nigerian religious leaders should speak up against insecurity. They should tell the people on how to secure themselves and include the issue of insecurity in their sermons. They should also give their congregants proper electoral orientations.
Unfortunately, they are not doing that because the more the country is spoiling, the more money they make.
Anywhere there is a crisis in a country, the people who benefit the most are religious leaders.
We should make sure we hold all our leaders, including clerics, accountable.”
