David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has responded to reports surrounding the alleged death of a nurse, Mary Habila, at his residence in Ebonyi State, dismissing claims that the incident was handled in secrecy.

Speaking while inspecting ongoing work along the Ebonyi section of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Superhighway, Umahi said it was the deceased’s family that forced open her room after becoming concerned about her wellbeing before taking her to the hospital.

According to the minister, the matter was immediately reported to the police, and he has directed that an autopsy be carried out with the consent of Habila’s parents to determine the cause of death.

“The family broke the girl’s door, called doctors from DUFUTH, who took her to hospital and did everything to revive her, but failed,” Umahi said. “The family reported the matter to the police, so where is the secrecy?”

Umahi also announced that he had instructed his lawyers to begin legal proceedings against individuals spreading what he described as false reports about the nurse’s death.

He described Habila as a dedicated employee of David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital and said her parents, who are currently in Ebonyi State, would address journalists and also pursue legal action against those circulating what he called false allegations.
