Liam Delap has completed a club-record £50 million transfer to Nottingham Forest from Chelsea, signing a five-year contract at the City Ground.
The 23-year-old striker is hoping the move will give him the platform to rediscover his best form and continue developing under manager Oliver Glasner.
Delap enjoyed a breakthrough Premier League campaign with Ipswich Town in 2024-25, scoring 12 league goals despite playing for a team that was eventually relegated.
His combination of strength, pace and direct running made him one of the most promising young English forwards in the league and attracted interest from several top clubs.
Chelsea won the race for his signature last summer, but his time at Stamford Bridge proved difficult. Delap managed just three goals in 47 appearances, with injuries, limited playing time and three managerial changes contributing to his struggles. His Premier League scoring numbers also dropped dramatically compared with his impressive season at Ipswich.
The striker’s difficulties were partly tactical. Ipswich’s counter-attacking style allowed Delap to use his pace and power in open spaces, while Chelsea’s possession-based approach offered fewer opportunities to play to those strengths. His confidence also suffered, with his shot conversion falling from 17.7% at Ipswich to 2.8% at Chelsea.
Forest manager Oliver Glasner could provide the perfect environment for Delap to rebuild his career. Glasner’s teams typically play with less possession and attack quickly, a style that could suit the striker’s physical and direct approach.
The Austrian manager also has a strong record of improving forwards, having helped Jean-Philippe Mateta become a much more effective striker at Crystal Palace.
For Delap, the move represents a fresh start and an opportunity to remind everyone why he was once regarded as one of England’s brightest young forwards.
With Forest willing to make him their record signing, expectations will be high, but if Glasner can get the best out of him, Delap could prove that his difficult spell at Chelsea was only a temporary setback.
