December is already looking like a highly competitive period for Nollywood, with tensions among fans emerging even before some of the industry’s major films hit the screens.
The latest controversy surfaced on Friday, September 4, 2026, after actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham announced the release date for her upcoming movie.
Shortly after the announcement, some supporters of fellow actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele took to social media to accuse Abraham of copying the concept of Akindele’s 2025 movie project.
The claims quickly sparked heated reactions online, with some users openly criticising Toyin and questioning the originality of her project.
One social media user alleged, “Toyin Abraham is such a copycat, and I know she did it intentionally so that she can be dragged. I hope people don’t fall for it; such an irritant.”
Another user, AjibolaLateefat, also took to X to accuse the filmmaker of repeatedly copying Funke Akindele.
She wrote, “Omg that other producer copies Funke Akindele every time like you just know she turned on her post notification for Funke Akindele’s post.”
However, Toyin Abraham’s supporters were quick to defend her against the allegations. One fan challenged those making the claims, asking them to provide evidence of what exactly she had copied.
The user wrote, “People saying she copied Funke Akindele. Bring out the Funke Akindele video she copied? Ko kin suyin ni??”
Another supporter, Zainab_Folasade, suggested that the criticism directed at Toyin was deliberate and coordinated.
She wrote, “Toyin will post her project, they’ll swarm her post telling her she’s copying and not original. They are doing it on her post right now but will come here and act like people are just talking out of nowhere.”
The latest development has once again drawn attention to the perceived rivalry between Toyin Abraham and Funke Akindele, two of Nollywood’s prominent actresses and filmmakers.
The pair have reportedly had a strained relationship, and their projects being scheduled around the same festive period have continued to fuel comparisons and rivalry narratives among their respective fan bases.
As December approaches, attention is now likely to remain on both filmmakers and their competing projects, with fans already debating originality, release dates and box-office prospects.
