Raphael Onyedika scored the winning goal as Eintracht Frankfurt claimed a 3-1 Bundesliga win over Hamburger SV on Sunday, getting the better of fellow Nigerian international Terem Moffi, who also found the net.
The midfielder struck two minutes into the second half to restore Frankfurt’s lead after Moffi had cancelled out an early own goal. Younes Ebnoutalib added a third in the 69th minute to complete the victory at Deutsche Bank Park.
The result gave Frankfurt back-to-back 3-1 victories over Hamburg within five days, following their German Cup meeting on Tuesday. Moffi scored in both encounters but ended up on the losing side each time.
Moffi responds to Frankfurt’s early lead
Frankfurt started brightly, with Can Uzun and Ebnoutalib creating early opportunities before Warmed Omari’s own goal gave the hosts the advantage in the 10th minute.
Hamburg responded four minutes later when Moffi converted Albert Grønbæk’s pass to bring the visitors level.
Both sides continued to compete for control, but neither managed to find another goal before the interval as the first half ended 1-1.
Onyedika delivers decisive second-half goal
Frankfurt regained the lead almost immediately after the restart through Onyedika.
The Nigerian midfielder reacted quickest after Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes failed to hold Lilian Brassier’s header from a corner, finishing from close range to make it 2-1.
Moffi was substituted in the 63rd minute, with Patson Daka coming on as Hamburg searched for another equaliser.
However, Ebnoutalib capitalised on a defensive error six minutes later to extend Frankfurt’s advantage and put the result beyond the visitors.
Hamburg attempted to reduce the deficit in the closing stages, but Frankfurt maintained their lead to secure all three points.
Onyedika played the entire match and capped his performance with the decisive goal, while Moffi’s contribution was not enough to prevent another defeat against the same opponents.
Hamburg will now turn their attention to Friday’s Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
