Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh has named four countries as 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, title contenders.
In a recent episode of Global Football Insights, Oliseh identified Nigeria, Egypt, Cameroon, and Senegal as the leading contenders for the AFCON title in Morocco.
According to the former Juventus midfielder, most teams needed just one super player to make them a title contender, but Nigeria has two super players – Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
When asked if Nigeria should be considered as title contenders for the AFCON, Oliseh concurred, saying: “Most teams need one super player to be able to perform and to be able to lay claim to being champions. Nigeria is blessed with two. We have Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.
“I really believe the Super Eagles can win the AFCON. For the Super Eagles to lay claim to be title contenders, then we’ve to improve our defensive network.
“If the strikers are going to attack, they need support from the defenders and midfielders for pull-outs, crosses and passes that you’ve been seeing very lately from [Alex] Iwobi,” he said.
Oliseh further stated, “I find Egypt as one of the title contenders. They’re the most impressive team so far from a holistic point of view.
“The Cameroonians are also title contenders because they’ve a rejuvenated team. This team is young, aggressive. The physical investment Cameroon is exploring is unbelievable.
“They want to make a point, and defensively, the Cameroonians are solid.
“Senegal is the most mature team in this tournament so far. Sadio Mane keeps impressing me.
“People write off the Saudi league, saying it is not as physical as the European leagues, but you see a player like Sadio Mane, performing at this level at his age, leading the team and still being able to be physically dominant.
“I am impressed with the way Senegal is playing, and I see them as title contenders.”
