Alleged r@pe of 5-year-old girl: Wanted suspect surrenders to police in Borno

The suspect who was declared wanted for the alleged r@pe of a 5-year-old girl in Maiduguri, Borno State has surrendered himself to the police.

The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday evening, December 18, hours after the police launched a manhunt for the suspect identified as Abdulsalam M. Adakwaki, following a petition that he r@ped the minor while on her way to school.

According to the PPRO, the suspect is undergoing investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

“The Borno State Police Command wishes to provide an update on the earlier clarification issued regarding the alleged r@pe of a 5yr old pupil at State Low-Cost area, Maiduguri,” the statement read.

“The Command confirms that the suspect, one Abdulsalam M. Adakwaki who was earlier declared at large in connection with the case, has voluntarily surfaced and presented himself to the Police. The suspect is currently under custody and undergoing investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

“The Command reiterates that the investigation is being conducted with utmost professionalism, diligence and sensitivity, in line with established procedures. In the interest of transparency and public confidence, the process remains open to appropriate oversight and monitoring by relevant Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

“Members of the public are advised to be wary of false, misleading, or unverified information relating to this case, particularly on social media. The Command strongly cautions against the circulation or sharing of both the suspect and victim photograph or personal details, as such actions amount to media trial, which may prejudice ongoing investigations and judicial processes.

“The Command assures the public, that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and that justice will be pursued. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
