Arsenal’s dramatic clash with Liverpool at Anfield has sparked fresh controversy after a disputed handball decision involving Dominik Szoboszlai dominated post-match discussions. The Premier League’s refereeing body has since ruled on the incident, leaving Arsenal fans fuming and pundits divided.

The Gunners believed they should have been awarded a penalty when a long throw-in appeared to strike Szoboszlai on the upper arm. The Hungarian midfielder, who was already the hero of the night after scoring the decisive free-kick, found himself at the center of another storm when VAR decided not to intervene.

The match itself was a tense, cagey affair with both sides eager not to concede ground in the early stages of the season. Chances were limited, tackles were fierce, and the game carried the unmistakable intensity of a rivalry that has grown in recent years. It seemed destined to be decided by a single moment of brilliance—or controversy.

That moment of brilliance came late in the game when Szoboszlai produced a thunderbolt from nearly 30 yards, catching Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya off guard. Anfield erupted, but Arsenal players immediately turned their anger toward officials, pointing back to the earlier handball call that could have changed the course of the contest.

Mikel Arteta, speaking after the game, hinted at his frustration but carefully chose his words. “We raised the level and dominated stretches of the match,” he explained. “At that stage, it’s always about fine margins. Sometimes those margins are decided by magic, and sometimes by mistakes. Tonight, it was the former.” His comment was widely interpreted as a subtle jab at the officials’ decision not to award the penalty.

Gary Neville, who was on co-commentary duty, described the incident as “borderline,” noting the difficulty of making such a call in real-time with so many players obstructing the view. “I wouldn’t want that given against me,” Neville admitted, though he conceded there was definite contact with Szoboszlai’s arm.

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean took a similar stance, suggesting the on-field decision was correct. “The ball traveled a long distance, and Szoboszlai’s arm was never moving toward it,” Dean said. “It just hit him. For me, that’s not a penalty.”

But others were less forgiving. Some pundits and supporters felt the decision reflected the inconsistencies of VAR. Dermot Gallagher, appearing on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, argued that awarding a penalty would have been excessive. “It hit the upper arm, his arms were in a natural position, and it came from above his head. It would have been shocking if a penalty was given,” he explained.

Former Arsenal striker Jay Bothroyd was more blunt in his assessment, branding the idea of awarding a penalty as “absurd.” He insisted that such decisions, if given, would undermine the integrity of the game. “That would have been a ridiculous penalty. The outcry would have been enormous,” Bothroyd said.

Despite those opinions, Arsenal fans online remain unconvinced. Many pointed to similar situations in the past that had gone against their team, with frustration growing over what they perceive as double standards in officiating. Social media platforms were flooded with clips, screenshots, and furious debates long after the final whistle.

The verdict from PGMOL has now settled the debate officially, but not in Arsenal’s favor. The governing body concluded that the officials were right to wave play on, reinforcing that Szoboszlai’s arm position and the distance the ball traveled meant no clear infringement had taken place. While that may be the “correct” interpretation of the laws, it has done little to ease the anger in North London.

With the season still in its early weeks, this ruling may yet fade into the background, but for Arsenal fans, it feels like another case of opportunity lost. For Liverpool, meanwhile, it marks a night where fortune and brilliance combined to secure a priceless victory. Szoboszlai’s free-kick will be remembered as the defining moment—but the handball verdict will be talked about just as much.
