Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso has said it is important to manage the fitness of Victor Boniface.

Boniface returned to action in Die Werkself’s DFB Pokal 4-0 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday.

It was the Nigerian first appearance for the Bundesliga leaders this year.

The 23-year-old underwent surgery for an adductor injury early in the year.

Alonso stated that it is pertinent not to rush the striker back to action.

“His (Boniface) outing against Düsseldorf was good for him, but he won’t be able to start yet. We want to help him bit by bit to get that good feeling on the pitch again,” Alonso said as per GFNB.

The forward is expected to be in action when Bayer Leverkusen take on Union Berlin in a league game on Saturday (today).
